Portable scanner 2010-07-23 Excellent product. I was fed up with having to lug around an A4 flatbed scanner and my employer insists that I email scanned images of my expenses receipts. This does the trick. Only downside is that you have to take care loading the pages to be scanned so they go in straight but that is fairly easy to achieve. Buy one!
Excellent little scanner 2010-06-03 I fully agree with all the other positive reviews on this scanner. Its a fantastic bit of kit for its size. Easy to install, and worked straight away, with excellent results. Well worth the money! Ian Silverton
Plustek M12 Scanner 2010-04-22 The first delivery of this product would not work because the software CD was defective. Whilst the manufacturer agreed to replace the CD nothing arrived despite much chasing over a few weeks. Amazon's response which was to completely replace the whole thing (just arrived so yet to operate) was immediate and very impressive.
NOT compatible with the Mac 2010-04-15 I have mixed feelings about this item but have given it four stars overall, as: 1. This is NOT compatible with the Mac, although there is nothing on the product description to indicate this. On the actual box it mentions only Windows operating systems, and the software on the provided disc is for Windows only (disappointing as it is good value - the Abbyy FineReader alone is worth quite a few quid). Plustek do provide a piece of software on their support site for scanning using a Mac but it is NOT a TWAIN driver and it will NOT interact with non-Plustek software. I'm reasonably computer-literate and am confident this is a problem with the product, not me. If you own a Mac, do not buy this scanner! 2. But the product itself looks good if a little flimsy and slower than I expected (using that limited Mac software). Nice that something comes with a USB cable, a rarity these days. 3. And Amazon has agreed to let me return the product free-of-charge, so it's difficult to complain about the customer service. Overall - good for a Windows PC, not for a Mac.
Great size but scans are often skewed 2010-04-10 The key feature is the small size. At first I thought "D'oh! It is so obvious! Why move a scanning head inside a large box when you can simply move the paper?". Having used it, I see why. The rollers drag the paper in but do not grab it very accurately. There are no paper guides to ensure paper is fed in squarely - scans often appear skewed. The description says there is de-skewing software but if there is it does not seem to be active. One often has to feed sheets in several times to get a level scan. This may not be a problem for scanning receipts or rough sketches. It is a problem when scanning material for archiving or OCR. Brightness levels are badly set up. The setting that gives the most accurate threshold for black-and-white text is too dark for grayscale scans of the same page. Text mode seems to include good de-speckling software, because scanned text seems fairly clean of background noise. It is great if you have use for a scanner you can carry with a laptop, and can accept its shortcomings. Business people on the road, scientists in the field, researchers in the library, and so on. The poor alignment issues make it unsuitable for scanning more than a few pages at a time. If it came with some kind of clip-on sheet guide, this would be a much better product. I'm keeping this item because I might need its portability some time, or give it as a gift to a student friend living in a small bedsit, but I will be shopping around for a conventional moving-head scanner for archiving documents in decent quality and accuracy.
